What springback actually is
Gluten is elastic. Stretch it and it stores the strain, and the moment you stop pulling it gives that energy back and the dough contracts. That is not a defect - it is the same property that lets a base hold a thin center without tearing, and dough with none of it would be pastry.
Gluten also relaxes. Given time, the network rearranges itself around the new shape and stops pulling. Almost every fix below is a way of giving it that time, or of not asking for the shape all at once.
The four causes, in order of how often they are the answer
1. The dough is cold. This is the answer far more often than anything else. A ball straight from a 38 F fridge is stiff, and cold gluten relaxes slowly. Take the balls out and leave them covered at room temperature for one to two hours before you intend to stretch - longer in a cold kitchen. Dough that has come to room temperature stretches almost by itself.
2. It has not rested since it was shaped. Balling a dough winds the gluten up deliberately. If you ball and then immediately try to open, you are fighting a structure you just built. Twenty to thirty minutes covered on the bench is usually enough after shaping.
3. It is under-fermented. Fermentation itself relaxes dough - the network slackens as it proceeds. A dough pulled early is tighter for the same reason it is bland: it has not had time. 4. It was overworked. Less common at home than people assume, and easy to identify: a dough that was kneaded hard in a machine and then shaped without a rest is tight all the way through. The remedy is the same as everything else here, which is time.

The rest that fixes most springback, and the step most often skipped
Cover the ball and walk away. Nothing you can do with your hands in those twenty minutes achieves what the twenty minutes achieves.
The two-stage stretch
When a dough resists, the productive response is to stop, not to pull harder. Pulling harder loads the gluten further and it contracts further - and in a thin center it tears instead.
Open the base to about two thirds of the diameter you want. Set it down, cover it, and leave it for ten to fifteen minutes. Come back and open it the rest of the way, and it will go without resistance. A dough that will not open is telling you it is cold, or recently shaped, or young. All three answers are the same answer.
Three things that do not fix it
A rolling pin. It gets the diameter, and it does it by crushing the gas out of the rim you spent a day developing. You get a flat, tight disc that still contracts and no longer has a cornicione. The exception is genuinely thin, cracker-style bases, where that is the intention.
More flour. Flour on the bench does nothing for elasticity and quietly lowers your hydration, which makes the dough tighter still - the mechanism is in the hydration guide.
Stretching it over your knuckles for longer. If it is fighting you, more of the same makes the fight worse. Put it down.
When springback is actually the good news
A dough with no springback at all is not a well-behaved dough, it is an over-fermented one. It opens beautifully, tears easily, will not hold a rim, and lands on the stone as a shapeless puddle. If your dough opens with zero resistance and then goes limp, the problem is at the other end of the same scale: cut the bulk ferment, or move it colder.
Somewhere between fighting you and having nothing to say is a dough that resists gently and then yields. That resistance is what carries a thin base to the oven in one piece.
The routine that removes the problem entirely
Take the balls out early. One to two hours before you plan to bake, longer if the kitchen is below 68 F. This is the single change that fixes most cases.
Keep them covered. A skinned dough is a tight dough, and a dry surface tears where it should stretch. Lidded containers, not a tea towel - the options are in the container roundup.
Handle one ball at a time. Leave the rest covered while you open, dress and launch. Dough left out uncovered while you work through a batch dries and tightens.
Use a scraper, not your fingers, to move it. A bench scraper lifts a slack ball off the counter without dragging and re-tightening it.

Why does my pizza dough keep shrinking back when I stretch it?+
Nine times out of ten it is cold or recently shaped. Let the balls come to room temperature for one to two hours, and rest a shaped ball for twenty to thirty minutes before opening it.
How long should dough sit out before stretching?+
One to two hours from the fridge in a normal kitchen, longer below 68 F. The dough should feel slack and slightly puffy rather than firm and cold in the middle.
Can I fix springy dough without waiting?+
Partly. Open it to about two thirds of the diameter, rest it covered for ten to fifteen minutes, then finish. That is the fastest honest route, and it is still a wait.
Should I use a rolling pin if the dough will not stretch?+
Only for cracker-thin styles. A pin presses the gas out of the rim, so you trade the puffy edge for a flat one - and the dough often still contracts.
Is springback a sign of good dough?+
Some is. A dough with no resistance at all is usually over-fermented: it opens easily, tears, and will not hold a rim. You want gentle resistance that yields after a short rest.
