Three measurements, in order
1. Your pizza diameter. The blade must be at least this wide. A base wider than the blade overhangs, drapes over the edge, and catches as it goes in. No technique fixes it.
2. Your baking surface. The blade should be no wider than the surface, because you need to be able to place the pizza with a little room on each side.
3. Your oven mouth, and its depth. The blade plus your wrist angle has to go through the opening. The handle has to be long enough that your hand reaches the back of the surface while staying outside.

17 in or more, which few home ovens take
The bottom row is why most home pizza settles at 12 to 14 inches. A 16-inch pizza needs a 16-inch blade and a 17-inch surface with clearance around it, and a standard 30-inch oven rack does not comfortably accommodate that.
Surface first
Size the surface to your oven, then the pizza to the surface, then the peel to the pizza
Everyone does this backwards - they buy a peel, then find it does not match anything. The oven is the only fixed constraint in the chain.
Handle length
The working rule is that your hand should stay outside the oven mouth when the blade tip reaches the far edge of the surface. For a domestic oven with a 16-inch surface set 4 to 6 inches back from the door, that means around 24 inches of overall length. Published overall lengths for the peels here run 26 to 27.6 inches, which is comfortably enough.
Longer is not automatically better. A 30-inch peel is harder to keep level, harder to store, and it gives you less control at exactly the moment you need most.
Blade width sets what you can launch. Handle length sets whether you can do it without leaning into a 500 F cabinet.
Rectangular blades and round pizzas
Several peels are rectangles - 12 by 14 inches, for example. Against a round pizza the relevant number is the narrower dimension, because that is what has to span the base. A 12 by 14 blade launches a 12-inch pizza, not a 14-inch one.
Storage, which is a real constraint
A 27-inch peel does not go in a drawer. Options that work: a hook on the inside of a pantry door, a slot beside the fridge, or a folding-handle design that collapses to about 10 inches of handle. If a peel has nowhere to live it ends up behind the fridge, and a peel behind the fridge is a peel you do not use.
Sizing the dough to match
Once your pizza diameter is fixed by your surface, your dough ball weight follows from it - and it does not scale the way people expect, because area goes as the square of the diameter. The table is in the dough ball weight chart.

What we would buy
Ooni
Ooni 12-Inch Pizza Peel
1.19 lb and 12 inches wide. If your oven mouth or your storage is the constraint rather than your pizza size, this is the one that fits.

Ooni
Ooni 14-Inch Perforated Pizza Peel
Perforations let flour fall off before the pizza does, and 610 grams across 14 inches is light enough to keep the launch steady. The best single peel for a home oven if you are only buying one.

Epicurean
Epicurean Richlite Pizza Peel, 14 x 24
A pressed wood-fiber board that behaves like wood for launching and like a cutting board afterwards. The number that matters is the one nobody quotes: it is rated to 350 F, so it is a transfer tool, not an oven tool.

Questions
Frequently asked
What size peel for a 14-inch pizza?+
A 14-inch blade, on a baking surface of 15 to 16 inches. Anything narrower and the base overhangs the blade and catches as it goes in.
Can a peel be too big?+
Yes. A blade wider than your baking surface leaves you no margin for placement, and a blade that has to be angled hard to clear the oven mouth is difficult to keep level with a loaded pizza on it.
How long should the handle be?+
Long enough that your hand stays outside the oven when the blade tip reaches the far edge of the surface. For a domestic oven that is around 24 inches overall - most full-size peels are 26 to 28.
Does a rectangular peel work for round pizza?+
Yes, but size it by the narrower dimension. A 12 by 14 inch blade handles a 12-inch pizza, because 12 inches is what has to span the base.
